Joe- I haven't seen that kind of stiffness, but I think you should start by loosening the bushing in the front panel where the tuning shaft is. You might be able to try that without dropping the front panel. After that, I'd drop the front panel and see if the stiffness is in the main tuning. I'll bet the capacitor needs to be cleaned/lubed. you can access the capacitor by removing the top cover. I usually use some light oil, then work the shaft, then after it has loosened up, I hit it with some deoxit.

Subject: [Hammarlund] SP-600 tuning problems
Thanks for all your advice.
My tuning problem is a bit different than I first thought. As I played with the
set today and tuned the set manually (by turning the tuning dial), the tuning is
very, very stiff. Given that drag, it's no wonder the rollers would not work
properly.
I assume the answer is to pull the front panel and see what's going on with the
tuning. The field manual gives exploded diagrams, which should help.
Has anyone experienced this type of very stiff tuning? It's so stiff that it's
actually difficult to turn the dial by hand. Any tips or suggestions?
As always, thanks.
Joe Connor
