All:
As a result of information gleaned from the esteemed
Kim Herron, it appears my radio was repaneled HQ-180
made to look, taste, and feel like a 180A. I looked at
the schematics and detailed pictures of an "A" model.
My radio lacks features (like the extra sockets on the
rear and the "180-" sticker on the rear of the
cabinet) that the A would possess.
Otherwise, it is still a good looking radio. I am
having a ball with this recent acquisition. The first
thing I did was install a surge protection device
between the power cord input and the fuse. If you ever
heard of that sickening "thud", that's the transformer
having inrush current due to some high point of the
120 VAC waveform hitting the primary. I believe the
surge protection device is not activated until the
line voltage waveform is at some zero point before
coming on line. In any even, no more "thud." I've
already done this conversion to my Viking II and it
puts me at ease.
The next thing to do is to find a good 3 wire cord and
install this in the "180A-imposter" for safety
purposes.
Final notes: thick brownish crappy oily stuff on the
front of the chassis and panel: nicotine? I think so.
Also, the clock doesn't work and the clock cover is
crazing. I'll probably opt for that R&R quartz
conversion for the radio. The cabinet is going to have
to undergo this cleaning too.
Other than that, that's it! I'm looking forward to
getting some 30 meter xtals for my Viking II and
putting the two units together for CW work. I suspect
it is much like 40 meter CW except no broadcast hets
or anything like that. Cool!
