Hi again Cal,

This isn't a "mod". It was a change by the factory when the A version
came out.

So somebody has changed the front panel.

The factory did no plug-in solid state replacements for the 5U4
rectifier tube.
The tube was completely eliminated from the circuit and the power supply
dropping
resistors were changed to get the correct voltages. In addition, the power
supply filter
cap values were changed as well.

The only "transition" stuff that they did with these receivers was
to use the black escutcheon
on the front panel instead of the gray one. I'm referring to the piece
that goes around the dials and meter.
My guess here is that the owner of the radio had a front panel that was
damaged in some fashion and
bought a new panel from the factory and it was after they changed to the A
version production. He may have had to
install the vernier capacitor as well as the bracket in the radio to carry
the notch depth control because it was on the
front panel on the early 180's just like the 170. The moved the controls
around to make room for the vernier tuning and
the depth control was moved inside the receiver to make room for it.
Tell me Cal, does the receiver have a flip top cabinet? There
were NO A's made with the first version cabinet that
doesn't have the flip top cabinet. Ditto with the 170A and 145A receivers.
>Comments? Thanks. Cal.
