[Hammarlund] SSB adapter

Hi group. I don't exactly understand what a product detector does. My HQ-180
has one and does a fine job. My HQ-110C (yes, the original clock still
works) has no product detector but does a fine job on SSB. I can even get
some pretty good SSB on my old Knight Kit StarRoamer by turning up the
sensitivity control to throw  the IF amp into oscillation. So why would such
fine receivers like the SP-600 and R390 be lousy on sideband? Never had the
opportunity to try either radio, but hope to own both some day. 73's, Mike
