You have it correct Mike.  Good SSB reception can be obtained by "manually" 
reducing the RF gain on the R-390A but some folks don't like that. 
Certainly, a good product detector enhances SSB and CW reception but is not 
necessary to get good results.  There is a rather simple product detector 
mod for the R-390A that many swear by...I just havn't tried it.  There are 
about a million threads on this subject in the archives if you wish to know 
more.  But in answer to your question, the R-390A is just fine the way it 
was designed.
