Thanks for the quick answers from the folks who suggested turning down the
RF Gain to clarify the signal before fiddling with the BFO.  I guess the
SSB transmissions I was able to understand without this procedure were
weaker than the other ones.

The only manual I have is a scanned copy from bama.sbc.edu, and it doesn't
address single sideband.
