[Hammarlund] HQ-180 audio

Dan, If your 180... "brought in just about everything I heard",... what did
you hear that it didn't bring in? I've had a long day and couldn't resist
being a smart-ass...Sorry. Anyway, I'm not familiar with the "AX". Did that
have crystal slots on the front panel? I think I remember seeing that in a
circa 1970 Allied catalouge...certainly a rare find today. As for audio, I
didn't start the current thread. But this has been an on and off again
subject on the Hammarlund list for a very long time. My HQ110C (yes the
clock works) gets music on weekend afternoons from stations like Radio
Netherlands on 15 meters and rivials some of my Hi-Fi sources. I run it
through a Crown IC-150 stereo pre-amp, Denon POA-800 power amp and a pair of
Altec 891A speakers (12 inch woofers). Sounds fantastic cranked up. The
Hq-180's audio is poor in comparison. Same thing with A.M. hams on 80 and 40
meters. At the same time, the 180 out shines the 110 on sideband during
crowded conditions. I think a lot of us are interested in these mods we've
heard a little about, but I need to do a lot more research before I'll
sentence the soldering iron to my treasured 180. 73's, Mike
