No, they don't sound different.  Just don't have passband tuning.

The widest passband in a 170/180 is 6 Khz.  That's not actually terribly 
bad relative to most ham receivers of the time with either 
mechanical/crystal filter or L/C IF strips.  You can use passband (aka 
vernier) tuning, or even just the main dial to shift the AM signal and place 
the carrier towards one edge of the passband to get a little more fidelity 
(and reduce opposite sideband QRM if there is some).  And you CAN 
improve the response of the audio stages which are intentionally 
restricted to deliver "communications quality" audio, or better yet tap the 
detector and use an external amp/speaker.

But it isn't going to sound like an SX-28 or similar receiver with broad IF's, 
wide skirts, and 6V6's in the output.
