[Hammarlund] HQ-180 audio and HQ 180AX

    Nice thread.
    Mike, my HQ 180AX not only has 6 crystal slots on the front panel where
the clock usually resides, but 5  behind those, under the lid. The panel
switch next to those slots therefore has 11 xtal positions plus "VFO." The
vernier tuning control is way over on the other (right) side, halfway up.
You are right, they are rare, I have only seen one other 180AX in the flesh.
It came out of a university-based research lab, where frequency accuracy and
stability was important. I believe that the X model was also useful (still
would be) for Net Control Ops. or anyone wanting to zero on a Net Control
Op.
