Larry,
I haven't had the good fortune to acquire a Comet, but experience with others suggests,
1. If it is an AVC problem, reducing the rf gain (or antenna level) should eliminate the problem, showing that that's indeed where the trouble lies.
2. If that doesn't help the next place I would look is at the audio coupling cap between first and second audio tubes. An easy check is to put a VTVM or scope on the output tube grid. If the capacitor is leaky (good chance at that age), you will see a significant positive voltage against ground. If it is ok, it should show a few negative
volts.
