[Hammarlund] Questions on HQ 180 restoration

Hi All,
I've recently begun to dig into my HQ 180 after owning it for some 9
years. This receiver was my first real "boatanchor" purchase shortly
after becoming a ham. It has always been pretty deaf in the sensitivity
department and in the most recent years has developed an annoying
"sizzling" sound in the audio which litterally sounds like bacon frying.
I've been pretty intimidated by this radio as most of my prior experience
in radio restoration has been simple recap jobs and alignments... Upon
removing the chassis from the cabinet I was surprised with some very
sloppy looking repairs. In one case there was a split capacitor slathered
in epoxy connected from pin 6 of V8 (6BV8) to a lug on T11, which I
removed cause it didnt jive with the schematic I have. So far Im proceeding
at a turtle's pace, and there are many areas of concern. My initial questions
are:
1. The manual I have is only 23 pages in length, I've read the manual for this
radio is 80 pages long and probably alot more detailed than the one Im
using, I've been unsuccessful downloading the manual from the BAMA site
(even though I have a Dejavu reader). Does anyone have a scanned copy?
2. I think the sizzling sound could be from the audio transformer, but I
simply have the Hammarlund part no. (k-38828-1) and no specs on it.
Whats a proper replacement?
3. The slot control is completely dead, anyone worked with one before?
4. The antenna trimmer is epoxyed to the front panel from behind, anyone
know of a replacement source?
I'd really like to correspond with someone whose been through one of
these, I know in top condition, an HQ 180 should be able to run with most
modern high end receivers. Any advice or suggestions will be appreciated.
