Might I recommend plugging the device into the USB port and typing the following command at the prompt?

ls -lart | grep tty | tail -10

This command gives the last 10 lines in the /dev directory. Any new devices plugged in will be in this last group.

On my system I see the following output :

crw-rw-rw- 1 root wheel 4, 0 May 11 18:49 ttyp0
crw-rw-rw- 1 root wheel 18, 0 May 11 18:50 tty.SerialPort
crw-rw-rw- 1 root wheel 18, 2 May 11 18:50 tty.MarkCohensiPhone-Wirele-1
crw-rw-rw- 1 root wheel 18, 4 May 11 18:50 tty.Bluetooth-Modem
crw-rw-rw- 1 root wheel 18, 6 May 11 18:50 tty.Bluetooth-PDA-Sync
crw--w---- 1 mark tty 16, 0 May 23 21:58 ttys000
crw-rw-rw- 1 root wheel 2, 0 May 27 07:05 tty
crw--w---- 1 mark tty 16, 3 May 28 01:37 ttys003
crw-rw-rw- 1 root tty 15, 1 May 29 09:52 ptmx
crw--w---- 1 mark tty 16, 2 May 29 09:52 ttys002
crw-rw-rw- 1 root wheel 18, 34 May 29 09:52 tty.uart-16FF42C59D892744

Your serial device will likely be different, but you are looking for tty.usbserial/tty.uart/etc and a random number at the end.
