[Ham-Mac] OT - but I'm stumped!

Guys! My G4/967 has developed an odd problem, and an entire day at an
Apple store has not helped! So I'm sure I can find out the right
answer here.

My superdrive has ALMOST stopped working.
1. It will mount an unformatted disk but will not burn it (kicks out
in VERIFY -- type 6 error).

2. It will NOT mount any formatted disk of any type, data or CD. It
just spits it out after a few minutes.

3. WORST OF ALL, I cannot boot from a bootable CD.

4. Mysteriously, the silver Apple Hardware Test CD mounts fine AND
can boot as startup disk up as well.

Apple store thinks the superdrive is shot (then why does it work with
the Hardware Test CD??)

I don't mind buying another drive, but I would like to be sure that
the problem is really there.

This is tough because I can't run Norton, TechTool4 or install any
software that comes on a CD!

You can take this off-list and contact me directly:

thanks!
