Hello Joe.
You came to the right place to ask questions like these!
As indicated by my fellow MacHams, there are some very good programs=20
available for the Mac on the Amateur Radio frontier.
As far as general software goes, Panther (Mac OS 10.3) includes a basic=20=
suite of software that will easily handle your Internet requirements=20
(browsing, email, dialup/broadband, etc), as well as interface with=20
your current PC (Macs "speak" Windows networking). Setup is easy, as is=20=
maintenance.
For finances I suggest Quicken, which is widely used on the PC platform.
The full Microsoft Office suite is available for Mac (sans Visio, which=20=
i hope they port over although there are other Visio-like apps out=20
there). So, you can share documents created on PCs using this most=20
popular suite of applications. Mac's TextEdit, which is included in the=20=
Panther distribution, can open Microsoft Word documents natively,=20
meaning you don't have to buy Office to view Word docs.
Apple maintains a software downloads page (at=20
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx) where developers (like many here=20=
in this forum) can publish free or almost-free software for the Mac.=20
There are many categories shown, and it'll give you an idea of the=20
support that is out there for the Mac platform. There is, of course, an=20=
ever-growing amount of commercial applications available as well.
If you have any other questions about the Mac platform or OS X, feel=20
free to ask them here on this list. We're a friendly bunch.
I would suggest you stop by your local Apple Store, or any of the other=20=
businesses that carry Macs (CompUSA, Fry's, etc) and check out the G5=20
to see what it's all about. It'll give you an idea firsthand what using=20=
a Mac is all about.
Regards,
Mike Carter - K6MEC
