The eliminating the single resource fork is actually a positive step,
because the Bundle or Package that replaces it allows for a much more
flexible organization. And Bundles aren't restricted to Cocoa. You can
use them in Carbon,too.
As for extensions, this is a User Experience issue of the highest order,
and Apple hasn't shown much leadership here. The guidelines outlined at
the WWDC in May changed when 10.1 was introduced. There was a huge
backlash against enforced extensions from the user community. I think
Apple got that message.
On a related note, in 10.1, Cocoa has minimal support for type/creator.
I expect to see a resolution on this issue in 10.2. I hope.
