Many older Macs won't support MacOSX, so you won't have a choice to switch
or not. However, those who haven't tried OSX may not understand the
significance of the OS.
OSX is not eye candy. It is an extremely stable system--in my mind, far, far
more stable than OS9 and before. For the first few months I ran OSX with
Classic, and ran most of my aps in Classic. I did not notice any appreciable
slowdown when running the older aps in classic. When I crashed, I crashed in
Classic -- not OSX. A crash in Classic does not bring down OSX -- is just
means you need to restart Classic, not restart the Mac.
Now, I no longer have any aps on my hard disk that require Classic. I wince
when I occasionally download a program and find that it opens into Classic.
I don't download programs if I know in advance they require Classic.
I can provide many "identifiable" benefits from switching -- at least for
me. The bigs ones are (1) STABILITY, STABILITY..... In OSX I have "crashed"
twice in six months. In OS9 and earler, I was crashing at LEAST for or five
times weekly. (2) IMHO, a vastly improved interface and Finder. Now
accustomed to the OSX Finder, I shudder when I go back to the OS9 Finder on
my son's iBook. (3) FEATURES, like a much improved system preferences and
location manager;
OSX is not for everyone -- and some will never be able to run it without a
new machine. As for me, I'm thrilled that I switched - and I won't go back.
