I have not used VMWare on Linux, but on Windows you have to edit the 
configuration on each VM to avoid conflicts. I usually disconnect any 
hardware each VM doesn't actually need and disable the "connect at power 
up". Then I can simply connect a device to any VM when I actually need 
it. This applies to CD-ROM, USB ports, serial and parallel ports, etc.
