You *may* have a limited list of repositories, but there ARE many
programs for which there is not a "packaged" version that magically
installs and where you need to compile the program.
Synaptic is the easiest way to go for downloading and updating programs
with Ubuntu. If you don't have it, do:
[sudo] apt-get install synaptic
and then give it a whirl.
Here is the list of repositories I have listed in
/etc/apt/sources.list, just as an example to compare with your own.
Some of the long lines may get mangled [turned into 2 lines] by the
email software between us:
