I have been running a core 2 Duo with Linux for about 10 months.
In fact I am typing this on my core 2 Duo machine running Ubuntu
Feisty, 64 bit version. Before that I ran the Duo on Ubuntu Dapper
Drake 64 bit version. I have also run it on 32 bit versions. My
current kernel as I type this is:
2.6.20-16-lowlatency #2 SMP PREEMPT Thu Jun 7 19:03:17 UTC 2007 x86_64
GNU/Linux
I also boot up with the following OS's/kernels with this machine [I
just cut/pasted from my grub menu.lst to make this list]:
title Ubuntu, kernel 2.6.20-rt8 x86_64 GNU/Linux
title Ubuntu, kernel 2.6.20-16-generic x86_64 GNU/Linux
title Ubuntu, kernel 2.6.20-15-lowlatency x86_64 GNU/Linux
title Ubuntu, kernel 2.6.20-15-generic x86_64 GNU/Linux
title Windows XP Professional x64 Edition
title Ubuntu, kernel 2.6.15-28-386 (on /dev/sda2)
title Ubuntu, kernel 2.6.15-27-386 (on /dev/sda2)
title Ubuntu, kernel 2.6.15-26-386 (on /dev/sda2)
title Ubuntu, kernel 2.6.15-23-686 (on /dev/sda2)
I had no particular problems installing things.
I have previously used Red Hat Linux, then Fedora, then Debian, then
Knoppix, and for the last 18 months or so have switched completely to
Ubuntu on all machines currently in use, and have been very happy with
it for ease of install and [for Linux] relatively trouble-free
operation.
