There are several password recovery utilities available. This is the one I
use:
http://home.eunet.no/pnordahl/ntpasswd/
Download either the bootable CD or floppy version, boot the "locked" system
with it, and follow the prompts. It's most successful if you just "clear" the
password rather than changing it.
*** NOTE ***
Due to the way Windows (2K/XP/Vista) security works, if you change the
password with anything other than the Windows User Accounts control panel, any
files encrypted with Windows' encryption (EFS) will be rendered unreadable as
it relies on the existing password/SID combination. Even if you change the
password back to the original, the files may still be unreadable. Just a word
of warning.

Subject: [Ham-Computers] Locked out of computer
Hello,
My son is locked out of his computer because he accidentally put in a password
and forgot it. He is running XP.
Is there a way for him to get in and reset the password without reinstalling
the system?
