If Ubuntu doesn't play nicely try Puppy 4.0 (4.1 is about to be
released) or one of the spin-offs from Puppy 4.x.

Puppy tends to work on computers and to detect hardware where
others struggle. It is also really easy on resources.

Same option of HDD or no-changes-to-HDD CD operation, plus
booting from USB stick or SD card!
