Ken, a belated reply:
I'm not discouraging trying Linux; this isn't the correct time.  You 
need an operating computer while getting up to speed with Linux.  The 
operating computer will allow you to continue your normal 
computer-related activities while becoming somewhat proficient with 
Linux at your own pace and allow you to contact Linux forums, etc., 
to get assistance - which you will need.

There are two general approaches, install Linux on an older computer 
you are no longer using (Linux is less demanding about computer 
resources) or set up a dual boot system.  Initial installation on 
another computer is easy. When you initially start up a dual boot 
computer, a screen allows you to choose between Linux and 
Windows.  Page 25 in "Beginning Ubuntu Linux"  covers this topic.  If 
you just want to see what Linux is about, you can get a CD-R that 
allows you to run Linux from a CD with no changes to your hard 
drive.  Should you decide to try Ubuntu, I can give you some links, 
etc. to get you started.
