[Ham-Computers] Strange? IE6 Behavior

I recently replaced the system board, RAM and drives in our main machine with
newer but otherwise equivalent ones. And of course had to reinstall the OS
and all applications from scratch. For the most part, aside from any changes
made by applications as I installed them, and the usual changes to cookie
handling and etc. settings are pretty much still default.

In the previous incarnation, I had a program called today "Imaging" (which
started life as Wang and then Kodak Image), set as the default to open jpegs.
Since the reinstallation of everything, I hadn't changed the file open program
for jpegs from the default of Internet Explorer but had forgotten I hadn't
changed it.

During the normal work day I quite often have three (or more) instances of IE
open. A couple of days ago after working on some local stuff for a while, I
suddenly realized all of the IE instances were gone. But wasn't sure what I
had done when they disappeared. This morning I was selecting a detail photo to
send a customer and noticed all of the IE instances were gone again. On a
hunch, I opened three new instances of IE but just to the home page (our Xerox
LAN printer). Then I found that each time I (from Windows Explorer)
double-clicked a .JPG to open it, its path replaced the name in the most recently opened
IE instance on the system bar. Close the photo and double-click again and
the next one changed to the photo. Once the last one was gone, double-clicking
the photo file name opened a new instance instead of taking over an existing
one.

Is this normal? Is there an option in IE6 that I can select to force IE to
open a new instance instead of taking over an existing one? I don't want to go
back to using Imaging for jpegs as it won't open photos downloaded from our
Nikon D70 unless I run them through a compressor first. Is there anything else
available as just a quick viewer that won't constantly bug me to buy the
full-blown editor version?
