used to use Win98 and took IE off with 98Lite, think I used Opera as
browser, this was a lot quicker. I recall that there seemed to be fewer
BSODs (but that might just be my memory)

If I was installing Windows now, I'd probably go for Win98 less IE, but
with Mozilla Firefox (and Thunderbird instead of Outlook).
I've installed AVG antivirus on friends' computers & its found stuff
that their Norton hasn't (and they've noticed a marked improvement in
performance when I've stopped Norton) with, As you say, Zonealarm, plus
Spybot, etc, etc.
