[Ham-Computers] windows stuff

Last week I was fooling with Puppy Linux. I had
some minor problems and got some help from some of
the group. Now I have Puppy on a dedicated hard
drive and even got the swap partition to work with
it.

I got a lot of good suggestions from most of you.
Some of the exchanges touched on speed of higher
end computer hardware running windows. I was
dissapointed to find that Puppy was much faster
than XP even though XP was running on a much more
capable machine.

Since then I have uninstalled XP and installed
win98. I now get much better performance on that
particular machine.

Then I did some research on windows in general.
It never bothered me that win98 has IE integrated
into the operating system. Not that I would have
done it that way myself but I never considered it
might effect the speed of the overall system. I
also was not aware that software was available to
correct this problem. Using such software, I
nuked IE from one of my older win98 machines. The
results were amazing. At least I was amazed at
the speed increase. I did not take any
measurements (before/after) but applications now
run noticably faster.

Then I discovered that win95 did not have IE
integrated into the operating system. Right now I
am installing win95 on one of my spare hard disks
to see how it works with regard to speed. Just
for an experiment. I have software that will not
run under win95. Zone alarm for instance.

Anyway, I was wondering what the experiences of
the group were regarding windows stuff. Various
versions versus speed, versus capability.
