[Ham-Computers] Win98SE/msconfig

I had all manner of problems with ScanDisk on Win98SE.
Somewhere along the line, it was pointed out to me
that for some reason, ScanDisk on W98 wants a lot of
hardware RAM - not virtual. "A lot" seems to vary
with HD size. On my 200MHz Pentium II with 6Gig
drive, ScanDisk only began "behaving" with 192Meg of
hardware RAM. That's the max this particular PC would
hold, and one of my correspondents claimed that's what
you need in any W98 machine - the max that the
motherboard will support.
I've not done enough study to validate any of the
claims, though, just have the anecdotal evidence that
for my particular machine, ScanDisk either failed, or
required many restarts, until I increased RAM from
64Meg to the motherboard's max of 192Meg.
I no longer run W98SE. Once it became possible to get
a 2GHz P-IV machine with W-XP for under $500 brand
new, I saw no point attempting to keep the old
hardware going.
