[Ham-Computers] Re New Computers And Lack Of Ports

Greetings All, 	
	
As I ponder the practicality of replacing my primary computer system with a
modern one, I am faced with the issue of no serial and parallel ports, just USB.
I have a lot of hardware that will not work with USB.	
	
How far can I go beyond Windows 98 second Edition based systems before I lose
the serial and parallel ports?	
	
If it is a new XP Home Edition system I end up with, can I add the serial and
parallel ports? What about available card slots?	
	
I am getting the sense that I may end up using two systems to do the job of the
one I now have!
