You should always run ScanDisk before Defrag but before doing so I did a lengthy clear out of a variety of junque...I removed all startup items (at Start/Run/msconfig/Startup tab) to reduce the misery level by temporarily removing such jewels as Task Scheduler, VS, firewall and many others, changed my screen saver to "None," changed my power management for all items to "Never," disabled any permanent Internet connection, deleted all Temp Internet Files, deleted all cookies, emptied the Recycle Bin, did Start/Run/%TEMP% (that should have been the coup de main). Then I restarted the computer.
When I ran ScanDisk/Thorough/Fix instead of having to endure four to six, I got only one iteration of the "...start 10 times..." box of death. What on earth could be running to interfere with ScanDisk...the clock...the hard drive?
Degrag ran unopposed.
Go figure.
