[Ham-Computers] Restoring Windows from backup?

I am getting frequent crashes with my Windows 2000. I found that the
NTUSER.dat file was corrupted but there are more problems. For example
going to one subdirectory in “Program Files” to start a program crashes
the computer (before even trying to start the program).

I did install OpenOffice a few days ago witch might have something to do
with my problem.

I have a recent backup, with system state and recover diskette, made
with the windows backup program and I would like to restore the system
to this state, but I do not know how to do. (trying to restore the above
mentioned subdirectory crashed the computer).

Do I format the disk, install the system from the CD and then make a
recover from the back up program, or do I have to do all the update
stuff first? Is there a better way to do this? When restoring the whole
system I will be overwriting files that are in use, will this work? I
would like to avoid installing all programs again as that is a lot of work.

Grateful for any help
