The free software OpenOffice reads excel and also writes to the Micro$oft 
format if you wish.  It is from www.openoffice.org but it is a big download.  
Many magazine cover CDs have it.

Of course if you were using a good operating system like Linux there would be 
other programs that read and write excel files and they are also entirely 
free.
