[Ham-Computers] Mcafee Removal Problems

Greetings,

I gave up trying to download the 172 .dat files from the Mcafee web site that
Mcafee needed to run after being installed from CD. So I used their uninstall
option. Because this laptop is running under Windows 95a, it does not totally
remove any program. Files are left on the system hither, thither and yon.

I used my favorite OS, MS DOS 6.1 and removed the fragments. A serach of the
hard drive showed nothing lurking anywhere. The computer ran just fine.

I disabled the power handling functions, as there was a chance that after about
one hour it was the reason the download would suddenly fail with an 'illegal
operation' error message. I also increased the time before the hard drive was
powered down to a low level of operation.

I put the Mcafee 5.13 CD in the drive and let it run. I noticed that I no longer
was given the choice of a standard installation, the default, or a custom
installation. It had already decided on a custom installation for me.

This failed and the 'finish' button was indicated as my choice. The message was
that the installation had been interrupted and I needed to complete it at a
later time. Well, nothing interrupted it that I was aware of.

I looked in the 'control panel' under add/remove programs. There was 'Mcafee
Virus Scan' showing. So I tried to remove it with the 'install/remove' option.
What I got was the "Mcafee maintenance wizard" and it wanted to install the
Mcafee software. Being as the CD was still in the drive, I decided to let it
try. It failed, same reason as before, it was interrupted, or so it thought
anyhow.

I can not find any reference to 'Mcafee' on the system anywhere, but I know this
' maintenance wizard' has got to be there someplace. Any ideas as to where? How
do I get to it to remove it?

Thank you.
