   I would start with 300 dpi myself.

   Try both, use what you like.
If you use color, reduce the color level with the `saturation' control.

   Brighten up the low lights (dark grays) with your `gamma' control.
Experimentation required.

   I'm 100% LINUX so I use ImageMagick, I don't know any M$ programs.
