[Hallicrafters] License question.

Skip, if they were issued 50 years back, they are no longer valid.  The 
forever commercial license didn't come along until the late 80's or so, a 
ham license has never been forever.

Hi,  I just visited a friend and he is under the impression that his ham 
license and his 1st Class license are no longer - he had them about 50 years 
ago.  I thought both licenses were "forever" and only the call sign expired. 
Information (and opinions) sought.  Thanks.
