[Hallicrafters] Sadists

Yes, Bill Halligan, Art Collins and Oscar Hammarlund to mention a few,
would be rolling with laughter to think their products were still being used
50, 60, or 70 years later.

It's kinda scary to think that a 5 year old computer is just scrap metal. I
have a Commodore VIC-20 set up that I'm hoping will someday be considered
"collectable" (HI).

I just finished a compete stem to stern realignment of my
SX-115 — just because. I also had the band indicator and KC
dial lamps to replace.

I really have just one question — what mean spirited and
sadistic designer decided how those two lamp assemblies
would be installed? Did he ever actually attempt to (1) get
them out of the radio so the bulbs could be replaced and (2)
drive himself to the verge of insanity and
institutionalization (or drugs, or worse) trying to get them
back in? I think not … :)

I think a lot of products are built as sub-assemblies
and then stuck together. Parts like lamps go in during the
sub-assembly because its simpler or cheaper to do it that
way. Often the idea is that by the time a lamp or similar
part needs to be replaced you will have tossed the whole
thing and bought whatever is the newest and latest. Or, that
you will send the whole thing back to the factory.
