All I can say in Hallicrafter’s defense is that it wasn’t nearly as evil as what Mr. Hammarlund did with the PRO-310 — where you have to essentially “kit” the radio to replace the cords that drive the dial mechanism.  Planned obsolescence, for sure :)

Often the idea is that by the time a lamp or similar part needs to be replaced you will have tossed the whole thing and bought whatever is the newest and latest. Or, that you will send the whole thing back to the factory.
