[Hallicrafters] """"grimy rig

There are so many different cleaning products, regional and national, and so
many different metals and alloys that one product does not work for all. Try
them all.

For decades Ive been promoting Scrubbing Bubbles for grime and nicotine
removal.

Murphys is great on wood cabinets.

Greased Lightning does wonders on serious crud buildups as well as restoring
plated chassis such as some Hammarlunds.

Prep-Step in various concentrations gently loosens rust with Q-Tips or a rag
and doesnt attack good metal.

Diet Pepsi and Coke is another good rust remover, especially on tiny chrome
pits since it contains phosphoric acid. Regular Coke and Pepsi contains
sugar and should be avoided in many cases as the residue gets where it cant
be removed at times.

Ive dunked chassis that were completely stripped of anything non ferric in
sulphated molasses and water and let sit a week or so. Non sealed
transformers and chokes must be removed. Summer temperatures work faster and
do it outside as it can raise a stink. Use 1 part sulphated molasses to 4 or
5 parts of water. It will not remove grease and paint. Remove and pressure
rinse the scale with a garden hose and the remains is pure virgin steel and
iron. Protect immediately with a quick drying sealer to prevent flash rust,
I use the Prep-Step. Many use a non yellowing clear coat or alodine. The
"broth" may be reused until its too weak and then diluted and poured in the
garden wherever iron loving plants are. It also kills moss.
Its no joke or urban myth, farmers have been using it for centuries and Ive
used it even for cleaning engine blocks, it leaves badly rust scaled water
passages looking new.

It also works well on pot metal, and carburetor castings but just do quick
dunks until the job is done and rinse quickly. Leave it alone for a week and
it will be dissolved!
.

WD-40 and similar will collect dirt in no time if not completely removed.
