......Center became a bit concerned when I had to shut
all the power off and the transponder disappeared from RADAR.
Many years ago before my Gulfstream and Falcon days and prior to transponders
being required, or even commonplace in light aircraft, I was ferrying a C-182 across
Colorado in the weather and darkness. The center said I was not in radar contact and
required me to continue making position reports, so I turned off the tranponder. In
about 30 seconds center informed me that they had lost my transponder. I asked why they
needed it if I wasn't in radar contact. I turned it back on and after a brief
delay center said, "Radar contact" and left me alone for the rest of the trip.
