Julian,

I suspect that the designers and engineers pretty well had to:

1) Calculate what the values should be for the function of the circuit.

2) "Breadboard" the circuit to ensure it works as the slide rule was the 
method of the times.

3)  Adjust as necessary - create a prototype.

4)  go into production once all decision makers gave their "nod" or 
whatever.

They usually left enough adjustment in the circuit to allow for it to 
work with what they had for parts.

But that's just my opinion/$0.002.  It's worth what it cost you!  LOL
