Joe,
I have an SX-115 and a couple of the 101 series (a 101A and and an
earlier model with 160 meters). The SX-115 does have less drift due and
maybe a little better mechanical stability due to its xtal controlled
first mixer. As far as sensitivity I haven't noticed any difference and
the selectivity performance is basically the same between models since
the circuitry is so similar in the final IF. The SX-101 family has a
very smooth dial feel IF the mechanism is clean and properly lubricated,
otherwise the SX-115 is going to have a better tuning feel.
If you are only going to keep one and profit from the sale isn't an
issue then keep the SX-115. Otherwise, the performance of the 101A is
pretty similar so it comes down to a matter of which one suits you
best. My primary AM station is a Johnson Ranger driving a Desk KW. I
first paired it with a National HRO-50T1 like the original Johnson ads
but the selectivity wasn't suitable for battle conditions on 75 meters.
I then switched to an SX-101 which was followed by an SX-115 and
currently I am using an SX-88. Actual on the air performance between
all of the Hallicrafters was very similar, the SX-115 was the most
stable but the SX-88 performs very well and looks great and its 250
cycle selectivity on CW works very well.
In summary, any of the Hallicrafters family (SX-96, 100, 101, 115, 117)
with selectable sidebands and the 50 Kc. final IF works pretty well
under most conditions. I recently picked up an SX-122 and even though
it is somewhat cost reduced in construction compared to earlier family
members it works surprisingly well. Its tuning mechanism is definitely
of lower quality than the earlier family members and like the much
earlier SX-88 it doesn't have the crystal controlled sideband switching
feature.
