Joe,
If anything, the SX-117 is the closest to the SX-115. The SX-117 is
very similar in circuitry to the SX-115, except for a few (I think 3)
additional tubes for some enhanced bells and whistles. Of course, the
SX-101 and the SX-115 share only one thing: avery heavy duty
mechanical construction, and the SX-117 is somewhat lighter in that
department, but not a "lightweight" performance-wise.
The SX-115 and -117 are a different generation of superheterodynes
from the SX-101 in that, that the former 2 have a first variable IF
and the rest of the bands are crystal controlled converters (the newer
concept a la Collins, Drake, etc.)
The SX-101 is an older standard, straight double conversion type
receiver, with a bandswitched first mixer/variable oscillator and a
fixed second IF.
The SX-117 performance is much closer - in fact almost identical - to
that of the SX-115, more so than the SX-101A which is inferior to both
in stability, and image rejection.
My 2 cent's worth, your mileage may vary....
