[Hallicrafters] S-38E dial stringing question

Background:
I'm putting an S-38E back into working shape and found the main tuning dial
stringing was incorrectly done - unless there was a 'new' way of doing
them. Referring to the manual's Fig 7, there were 2 passes of the cord over
rollers B & C, one bearing the dial pointer & the other bearing the spring.
There was no spring in the main dial drum. The passes crossed over each
other causing the spring to catch on the pointer and to wear on the other
part of the cord. So I decided to restring according to Fig 7.

Question:
Is the Fig 7 diagram accurate, or has snyone else run into the following
problem? When I run the cord from roller C to roller D like in Fig 7, the
cord rubs over the bandspread drum rims, instead of passing under the drum
as shown in Fig 7. As if the drum perhaps was too large, or the roller D in
the wrong place. To get the cord to pass under the drum as shown, I have to
go under roller D, & then the cord doesn't really touch roller D. I've
double checked the cord direction & I seem to have it strung per the
diagram OK.
