[Hallicrafters] Chassis Rust

Unfortunately, there is no easy solution to this one. If the goal is to
produce a nice looking well restored ACR-175 I would probably look for another
ACR-175 and use this one for parts to support the other. Actually this is the
best way to restore any old receiver. Buy two or three and combine the best
parts. They don't make ACR-175 replacement parts anymore so the only source for
needed replacements is another ACR-175. Rust and advanced oxidation will
always leave pitting behind which would take a lot of work to repair. Sometimes
the goal is a "hero" type restoration to see what you are capable of
achieving and in this case it might be reasonable to pursue it. The best way to do a
good job would be by completely stripping the chassis to facilitate rust
removal followed by replating with cadmium. This is the only way to make it look
new and factory original again. A short cut method would be to start by
disassembling the receiver as much as practical and tape up or mask areas you want
to protect from intrusion and go after it with wire brushes, rotary tools on
a Dremel, sandpaper and even Muriatic acid if necessary. Clean and dry and
paint the chassis with something suitable.

Although this post does not pertain to a specific Hallicrafters radio I hope
a list member may be of assistance.

I have acquired a RCA ACR-175 receiver with a badly rusted chassis, tuning
capacitor frame, and power transformer case. Short of striping the chassis
of parts and then replating I'd be interested in comments from those who have
faced a similar problem and how you accomplished your restoration. I have
photos for those who who wish them.

Thank you,
