[Hallicrafters] S-40a alignment

Actually, most boat anchor receivers have 100 at the
mimimum capacitance and 0 at maximum capacitance.
This is due to the fact that the receiver tunes higher
in frequency as the capacitance decreases and the
higher number indicates a higher frequency.

If you look at the logging scales on those receivers
that have them you will see that as the frequency
increases so does the number on the logging scale.

The Heathkit AR-2 and AR-3 are examples of exception
to the alignment with the bandspread fully open. The
alignment instructions for the receivers definitely
state that the bandspread capacitor is to be fully
closed when aligning the receiver.

There are other exceptions, but, in general, the
receivers are generally aligned with the bandspread
capacitor in the fully open position.

Normal practice with general coverage receivers is to
set the main dial to the high end of the band, and ADD
capacitance to the circuit with the bandspread
capacitor as you tune lower in frequency. This
includes the S-40. On receivers with uncalibrated
bandspread dials, the usual practice is "set to zero"
or minimum capacitance. Offhand I cannot think of an
example of a receiver -- especially a Halli -- that
does it the opposite way. I'd be curious to know what
the exceptions are.
