To the best of my knowledge (but then, what I know is
only exceeded by what I don't know) Hallicrafters did
not offer their receivers in other colors than the
ones we have come to know and "love". If I look at
the one shown on eBay (yes, I dared speak the name
eBay) I see that the lettering on the word "defiant"
is somewhat crude. Looks like someone used the
painted over lettering as a guide. They may have done
the same for the nomenclature on the knobs, or they
may have used transfer lettering.
There have been stories about some receivers,
particularly SX-28s that have come with different
color front panels. For example, one of my two SX-28s
has a white front panel. The person who sold it to me
thought it might have been an FCC unit. Since it has
push-pull output tubes (the FCC units had a
single-ended audio output) and no FCC tag, I doubt his
story. Also, I read an article many years ago in QST
about FCC monitoring during WWII, and all the
receivers they showed had black front panels. Another
story claimed that the white front panels were used on
hospital ships. On mine, at least, I think the story
is that the front panel may have been kinda dingy
looking, or didn't fit in with the decor, so the
previous owner decided to paint it white. With all
the nomenclature stamped into the panel, it is an easy
task to fill in with black paint and make a fairly
competent job. Someday I may repaint it, or I may
not. It looks pretty cool the way it is, and I have
another one with the correct blue-gray of the early
receivers anyway.
Hope this answers your question...
