I would suggest Osternmans "Shortwave Receivers Past and Present" book, as
it covers many manufacturers besides Hallicrafters. It gives good write ups
specs etc. and includes solid state and foreign made sets, and indicates
commonality or scarcity etc. Gives reasonable values to go by as well. SWL
ing has become very interesting with the ability to interface computers with
it. I would also suggest he/she suscribe to the SWL news group with these
QTH Mailman lists - lots of good stuff comes up on sun spots, SWL times
programs, discussions etc.

Subject: [Hallicrafters] Getting started in collecting Hallicrafters sets
I have a friend who is getting interested in collecting/listening to short
wave broadcasts. I suggested that he get Chuck Dachis' book for a good
introduction to Hallicrafters sets. My only experience with Hallicrafters is
two Vietnam era radios and an S38E set which I have had since 1955. I am not
really qualified to advise him on what sets to get for a start.
Can anyone make some recommendations?
Thanks,
Bill Howard
