The request really needs more meat to reply intelligently.
Here's my try.
What's the true objective? If it's just to listen to short wave
get a R/S DX 388 it will knock the socks off of anything Halli
produced and a lot smaller and cheaper.
What is his age? Are we on a nostalgia trip? I am; for that
reason I've had many of their models.
1. S40B I got one because my friend in the 50's had one and
always looked forward to hearing short wave on his radio.
I still have it. Works pretty good.
BTW I was never impressed with the S38.
2. I like the SX71 probably because it was one of my first
restorations (I've done about 3 so far). And it sounded
great on HF bands. Also looks like a short wave radio should.
3. SX 42 (avoid) a nightmare to get right. But awesome if you
can. I got two of those.
3. There is a host of "newer" Halli's in the 60's that are nice.
Most have the minature tubes and do not present a replacement
problem that older tube units to. Some are more stable because
of xtal control.
There are two others that are true "collector" items SX88 General coverage,
and SX115 ham band. Fill a cart with green backs to get those. Only worth
it to the person that has to have it all. Both are rare.
Your suggestion re Dachis is right on. There are so many models that it
is mind boggling. With that book your friend might be able to zero in on
what's right for him. Appearance on the shelf is really important to me.
