Bill,

This is a totally 'personal' issue. His bank account, listening interests,
"hopes", collecting to have or collecting as an investment etc.

He should buy the second edition of Chuck Dachis's book "Radios By
Hallicrafters", not the first or the first + the second. The second edition
contains everything in the first publication plus new material. So the
second edition is all he needs Bill.

Before anyone can purchase a radio, or before anyone should purchase a
radio, they first need to know what type of radio signals they want to hear;
Medium Wave, Short-Wave, Long Wave, public service bands, Ham bands,
international SW bands, military transmissions, aircraft frequencies etc.
Once he knows what he wants to hear, then he can begin to select a group of
radios. Then he can sort them down by factors of how much he can afford, or
is willing, to spend. Antenna requirements, special features he may need for
his location.

We can all suggest receivers for your friend Bill, but sometimes too much
information is worse than too little.

You have some general coverage receivers at your QTH Bill, why not invite
him over to listen?
