Depends you how heavy he can lift !!(just kidding) .Rcvrs like  the S19R 
,S20R  S38 ,S40 etc are simple  ones to work  on if he's new to tube electronics.
The ultimate hallicrafters are the Sx28,Sx42 etc which fit in the heavy  
boatanchor category.
