Gary,
Lighten up man, the whole thing is obviously a parody. PGW, Jeff, DTC,
and several others were keeping it going and joining in the fun.
First of all, glancing over a schematic and noticing that a circuit
might work better with a different value, well, there's merit in that
discovery but mentioning, "hey you guys realize that if you change the
value", that's not a copyright violation.
There actually is a copyright as well as a fair use issue though. It's
those reproductions of the ads. Who owns them? Not HCI, probably not
Hallicrafters.
Those are probably the property of the magazine.
This is an interesting area as the contract between Hallicrafters and
the magazine, QST, CQ, very likely does not exist any longer but those
images, in context, have some commercial value.
Last year, I purchased a book on boatanchors. Paid cash-money for it.
As time passes, the old images will gain value. Not a lot but enough
that one should respect the rights of the copyright holder.
My personal feeling is that one or two ads like that, hosted on a site,
reproduced in a book, whatever, is free for the taking but that the
images should be tagged with a citation, "from QST Nov 1948". At least
it gives credit to the actual copyright owner.
I'm guessing but I think the ARRL would have a problem if I started
selling the "Mega CD of all the Radio Ads from QST only $14.95 See the
first ad for the 75S-1, check out the prices that Henry Radio was asking
for used SX-115s in 1965. Ads only, no boring articles or DXCC listings."
