Yes Mike, the sound of the big radial engine is not a common occurrence anymore. However, I live about three miles south of Falcon Field, here in Mesa, Arizona, and I hear those sweet sounds, almost on a weekly basis, from a B-17G (owned by the CAF) and a B-25 (privately owned). Also a fleet of DC-6's and 4's that are used for fire fighting, take to the air, now and then. Ohoo yes, we must not forget the Allison and Merlin V12's. W alsoe have a Mustang and a Spitfire that "zooms" by occasionally. Beautiful sound. Now all we need is a Battleship.
Carry on

""About the time the bugler sounded "Retreat," I recognized the
sound of radial aircraft engines -- a rarity today --
and looked up; a restored Douglas DC-3, owned by US
Air and in Piedmont Airlines markings, made a low
bow-to-stern pass over the ship, as the plane made its
landing approach to the Wilmington airport. Looked,
and sounded, almost exactly right! Only thing that
would have made it better, would've been World War II
markings on the Gooney Bird.""
